What Makes You, You? Understanding the Difference Between Identity & Personality

What Makes You, You? Identity or Personality?

What truly defines who we are – is it our identity or our personality? This is a question I’ve thought about often in my work as a psychologist. While identity and personality are closely related, they are not exactly the same. “In this article, I will share some insights on the differences between them based on my research and real-life examples.”

Have you ever met someone and felt an immediate connection to them, even though you didn’t know much about them at first? Or maybe there was someone you just didn’t click with, even though on paper they seemed like someone you should get along with well. This shows how our personalities can affect our first impressions and relationships, before we even learn about someone’s identity.

“Identity is like a tree, deeply rooted and unchanging, while personality is like its leaves, swaying and changing with the seasons.”

Identity: The Core of Who You Are

Your identity is the core of who you are. It’s the sum total of your values, beliefs, and experiences. It’s the “you” that remains constant, regardless of the situation or environment.

Our identity provides context for who we are and helps answer the question “who am I?”.

Identity is like a fingerprint – no two are alike.

Personality: The Colors You Display

On the other hand, your personality is the unique combination of characteristics, behaviors, and traits that define how you interact with the world. It’s the way you laugh, the way you think, and even the way you move. It’s the “you” that people see and interact with on a daily basis.

It helps answer the question “what am I like?”. Through our characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Can you curius about how personality describe wiith metaphors?

“Personality is the vibrant palette of colors that you paint your world with.”

Identity vs Personality: What’s the Difference?

  • Identity involves things like gender and culture that don’t change. Personality can change some based on what happens in life.
  • Identity is about the groups you belong to, like family or culture. Personality is about how you act and feel as an individual.
  • Identity comes from birth or early life mostly. Personality develops more with both nature and what happens in life.
  • We can’t control our main identities easily. But we have more control over developing our personalities by being aware of ourselves and working on how we act.
  • Identity is often seen as an internal concept, Personality, on the other hand, is often seen as an external concept.

To understand the difference better, let’s compare two people – Emma and Amelia. Emma is introverted, reserved, and thoughtful. she enjoys spending time alone reading and is slow to warm up to new people. Amelia is friendly, outgoing, energetic, and always wants to be around others.

So their personalities differ – Emma is more introverted while Amelia is extroverted. However, they could both identify as female, American, middle-class, straight, etc. Their identity overlaps but personality sets them apart.

Reflect on your own life. How have your identity and personality evolved over the years? Can you identify specific experiences that have influenced your personality traits?
